Where is Macondo?

The journey begins in Aracataca, García Márquez's homeland. Here, among dirt roads and colonial houses, the Nobel Prize winner for Literature took his first steps and lived the family stories that would later take shape in his work. We visited the Gabriel García Márquez House Museum, un lugar donde las paredes parecen susurrar los recuerdos de su infancia.

Our next destination is Ciénaga, Magdalena, a town steeped in history, both real and literary. Here he witnessed the Banana Massacre, a fact that shocked the country and that García Márquez narrated with great force in One Hundred Years of Solitude. Caminaremos por las calles polvorientas que inspiraron esos pasajes de lucha y resistencia, pero también disfrutaremos de la belleza de la naturaleza.

The journey continues towards the Palafito Villages, donde la vida se desarrolla sobre el agua. Este es un lugar en el que parece que el tiempo se detuvo, con casas construidas sobre pilotes que se mecen suavemente al ritmo de las olas. Aquí, la comunidad local vive con el agua como su compañera constante, una escena que evoca el Macondo donde la naturaleza y la realidad se entremezclan en cada rincón.

We finished our trip in Barranquilla, the vibrant city that became García Márquez's creative refuge in his youth. Here, in the famous Barranquilla Group School, the writer found a space to nurture his literary talent. We will visit the emblematic places that were part of his life, such as the La Cueva Bar, donde las discusiones literarias eran tan intensas como la música del Caribe.
