A journey through Barranquilla’s historic center, exploring the city Gabriel García Márquez knew, its cultural landmarks, and the traces of an era that shaped his life and work.
Barranquilla played an important role in Gabriel García Márquez’s life and in the intellectual circles that shaped his early years as a journalist. This tour connects iconic landmarks in the historic center with places of cultural memory and contemporary urban art, offering a literary and historical perspective on the city.

Between 1950 and 1953, during his stays in Barranquilla, Gabriel García Márquez found much more than a place to live: he discovered an intellectual environment that would shape his path as a writer. In his early months, he worked for the newspaper El Heraldo and stayed at the Hotel San Nicolás, in the heart of downtown, amid the city’s commercial activity and everyday life of busy streets, cafés, bookstores, and newspaper offices. Barranquilla was a dynamic, cosmopolitan city, driven by its port and open to new ideas, where writers, journalists, and artists gathered to discuss literature, film, and culture. On this tour, we follow Gabo’s footsteps through the historic center, from places connected to his life and the Barranquilla Group to the heritage of La Aduana and the contemporary expressions of the Open-Air Museum. We travel by bicitaxi through a city that helped shape the Nobel laureate’s perspective.
